Lautrec was founded in 940 and the town was built in the architectural style of a castrum, surrounded by a double fortified wall with eight gates. Lautrec experienced the Hundred Years War and the crusade against the Cathars as well as the wars of religion, since Lautrec was Catholic in a Protestant region. This region is known as a tourist crossroads due to its proximity to the Montagne Noire and the medieval city of Carcassonne. It is part of the Pays de Cocagne between Albi and Castres.
