The Cévennes foothills with Saint-Jean-du-Pin are strategically located between Alès, the capital of the Cévennes and the Cévennes National Park. A Vauban-style fort was built on top of the old town. The Cévennes National Park covers an area of 3,730 km2, making it the second largest national park in France.
