The origins of Alès date back to the Gauls and excavations have shown it to be an oppidum. In the 18th century, the Camisards revolt broke out following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. A Vauban-style fort was built on top of the old town. The Cévennes National Park covers an area of 3,730 km2, making it the second largest national park in France. The Cévennes have been a U.N.E.S.C.O. World Heritage Site since 2011.
