Description
Situated halfway between Carcassonne and Limoux, the county of Razès, of Carolingian origin, forms an amphitheatre on the wooded hills offering views of the Pyrenees.The former seigneury of this castle was donated by Simon de Montfort in 1212. It overlooks the village to protect it more effectively. The church, the former chapel of the castle, is Romanesque in style.
The castle
Set in 48 hectares of protected agricultural land, this 15th century brick castle in need of restoration (structure) has 500 m2 of living space overlooking the village. This 15th century quadrilateral castle with its outbuildings and 1.6-hectare plot of land are listed historic monuments. Built in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, the castle's three red brick towers (rare in the Carcassonne area) are reminiscent of fortified houses. The 2 turrets were built in the 15th century and the other 2 in the 17th century. One of these turrets was destroyed in the 18th century. A spacious 2-storey sheepfold with vaulted rooms on the ground floor. The 3 other outbuildings are in need of renovation. Major restoration works are planned. Structural, electrical and heating works. Inside, the parquet floors are cracked and there are major cracks showing the wear and tear of time. The total cost of renovating the castle will be between €1,600,000 and €2,000,000.
Ground floor
The main entrance to this fortified house is on the south façade. This small medieval castle welcomes you through a massive doorway. On the left, a corridor leads to the kitchen with its fireplace and French-style ceiling. The scullery opens on to a small courtyard with a well. On the right, a small lounge with wainscoting. A wide stone spiral staircase leads up to the first floor. On the north facade, a spacious covered courtyard with traces of an old fireplace.
First floor
The first-floor landing welcomes you through a gallery leading to the bedrooms and reception rooms. A fireplace with 17th century stucco decoration and a French ceiling. A domed staircase leads to the attic, which takes up the entire lower level.
Outbuildings
A 2-storey, 400 m2 sheepfold with barrel-vaulted rooms on the ground floor in an unfinished state. An outbuilding of 100 m2 that could be used as a garage with a new roof. 2 outbuildings need to be rebuilt.
The land
The 48-hectare estate is undeveloped and comprises meadows and woods. 2 wells, one of which is in the castle.
